Dandelion is a very common perennial weed, with a well-known large yellow flower. Dandelion is often found in lawns and grasslands. Dandelion weed can be identified quite easy as it contains a milky sap. It has a large taproot and the leaves have a backward-directed pointed leaflet lobe.
The name dandelion comes from the french dent-de-lion, meaning lion's tooth, referring to the tooth-like edges of the leaves.
The common dandelion is the species Taraxacum officinale. Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Taraxacum are native to Eurasia and North America, and two species, Taxacarm officinale and Taxacarum erythrospermum are found as weeds worldwide including New Zealand.
