Dandelion

Dandelion is a common weed with a large yellow flower often found in lawns.

Identifying

Dandelion is a very common perennial weed, with a well-known large yellow flower. Dandelion is often found in lawns and grasslands. Dandelion weed can be identified quite easy as it contains a milky sap. It has a large taproot and the leaves have a backward-directed pointed leaflet lobe.

Solving

In lawns

Apply a selective herbicide like LawnPro Turfclean. This will effectively control dandelions but will leave lawn grasses uneffected. Alternatively dandelions can be spot sprayed with Weed Weapon Extra Strength, Weed Weapon Rapid Action  or painted with Invade Gel .

In garden beds

Spot treat with Weed Weapon Extra Strength, Weed Weapon Rapid Action or painted with Invade Gel. The name dandelion comes from the french dent-de-lion, meaning lion's tooth, referring to the tooth-like edges of the leaves.

The common dandelion is the species Taraxacum officinale. Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. Taraxacum are native to Eurasia and North America, and two species, Taxacarm officinale and Taxacarum erythrospermum are found as weeds worldwide including New Zealand.

There are five similar species with danadelion like flowerheads:

  • Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) have a single large flowerhead at the end of a short hollow stem which exudes white sap when cut.
  • Hawksbeard (Crepis capillaris) has smaller flowerheads on taller, leafy, branched stems.
  • Hawkbit (Leontontodon taraxacoides) are large and are at the top of solide, leafless, unbranched stems.
  • Catsear (Hypochaeris radicata) has tall little branched, leafless stems.
  • Oxtongue (Helminthotheca echioides) has tall, stiff, bristled hairy stems and leaves.
