There are many ground and soil insect pests that cause damage to plants. Often the larvae are responsible for damage to root systems such as grass grub eating the roots of grass in pasture and lawns. Cluster fly larvae feed on beneficial worms in grassy areas and the adult flies later infest our homes and other buildings as clumps of large black flies which lurk together in the darkened corners. Earwigs eat our soft vegetables and hide amoung the lettuce leaves. Ants and slaters may do little harm in the garden except annoy us at our barbecue but when they move into the home to find food in our kitchens and larders they can become a significant nuisance.
NO Insects Lawngard Prills is a slow release granule (prill) that controls insects both in the adult and immature forms on and under the soild surafce.
For the control of caterpillars and other insect larave and grubs on plants use Organic NO Caterpillars. It can be safely sprayed directly on vegetables and fruit crops without a withholding period.
Earwigs
Female earwigs produce up to 20-60 eggs laid in burrows 3 to 4 centimetres under soil surface. Most species have one generation a year, over-wintering in the soil. Both adults and the young require moisture to live.
Earwigs feed mostly at night. They scavenge on dead insects and decomposing plant materials. Some earwig species are attracted to lights. In daylight earwigs will seek shelter under organic matter such as mulch, pea straw, leaf litter, and other debris. Earwigs prefer dark and damp areas. Earwigs eat live plants and can do damage to field crops.
Control earwigs using NO Insects Lawngard Prills sprinkled on soil and areas around plants or the buildings to be protected. Water well in.
Weevils
Vine weevil larvae will attack the roots of tuberous begonia and other plants and are a particular problem for amateur and commercial growers. NO Insects or Disease Spectrum Liquid can be used as treatment of the leaves of the begonia and as a soil drench. Avoid spraying the flowers of the begonia as is may cause browning of the edges of petals. The spectrum insecticide being systemic will enter the begonia transport system and travel to the tubers where it will control the vine weevil larvae.
Black Field Crickets
Black field crickets are normally a problem only in Northland, Auckland, parts of Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay. Eggs are laid in moist soil from February to May, and nymphs (immature adults) emerge from November to January. Adults appear from February and live for two or three months. They inhabit cracks in the soil and eat surrounding crowns of grasses, which usually die. During long drought periods the growing crowns of grasses are attacked; this often kills the plants and leaves the soil open to weed invasion.
NO Insects Lawngard Prills will kill the insects in the soil as eggs and nymphs and adults the hide in cracks in the ground will also be killed on contact with the insecticide. A bait can be made by mixing NO Insects Maldison with grain (wheat, barley or crushed maize) at the rate of 12.5g to 1kg grain and spread on 500-1000m2 depending on extent of infestation. This should applied around February when the adults appear.
Earthworms
Earthworms are normally regarded as the lawn's friend, aerating and fertilizing the soil. However, bowls clubs often wish to get rid of worms in their highly manicured bowls green. The activity of worms will disrupt the perfect smoothness of the surface and worm casts could drastically influence the trajectory of a bowl. NO Insects Carbaryl 80 can be applied to bowls greens and other grass areas where worms are not wanted.
LAWNGARD PRILLS
This product is specifically formulated for use on ground and soil dwelling insects such as; ants, grass grubs, porina caterpillars, cluster flies, carrot rust fly, wire worms, earwigs and slaters. Sprinkle granules over the problem areas, then water in well. The insecticide is carried into the soil where the grubs are feeding, or by direct contact of the porina caterpillar in their tunnels.
