Lawn Insect Damage

Grass Grub, Black Beetle and Porina Caterpillar

The grass grub is found throughout New Zealand and is considered to be New Zealand's major pasture and lawn pest. The porina caterpillar and black beetle larvae causes similar damage to the roots of lawn grass and pasture. Porina is the more easily controlled pest and the treatment recommended here will control these and other sil insect pests.

Armyworm / Cutworm

Armyworm or cutworm are the caterpillars of a moth. These caterpillars eat through the stems of seedlings and lawns. The armyworm's diet comprises mainly of grasses and some small grain crops. When Army worms feed on the foliage and shoots of grass they leave bare patches.An infestation can be hard to detect as the caterpillars migrate to new feeding areas in the cool of the night. When the caterpillars near pupation, they can devastate an entire crop in a few days. The parent moth rarely does any damage and is not often seen as they mainly fly at night. These 45mm-long, greeny-brown grubs hide in the lawn thatch during the day. Look for small moths over your lawn at dusk. These are the adult army worms mating and laying eggs. Lawns can be protected from attack by armyworm using NO Insects Lawngard Prills.

Cluster fly larvae

Although cluster fly larvae do not damage grasses directly they feed on the earthworms that help keep lawns in good condition. The use of NO Insects Lawngard Prills on lawns and grass areas within 200m of buildings will protect them from clusterfly infestations in autumn and spring.

Black Field Cricket

Black field crickets are normally a problem only in Northland, Auckland, parts of Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay. Eggs are laid in moist soil from February to May, and nymphs (immature adults) emerge from November to January. Adults appear from February and live for two or three months. They inhabit cracks in the soil and eat surrounding crowns of grasses, which usually die. During long drought periods the growing crowns of grasses are attacked; this often kills the plants and leaves the soil open to weed invasion.

NO Insects Lawngard Prills will kill the insects in the soil as eggs and nymphs and adults the hide in cracks in the ground will also be killed on contact with the insecticide. A bait can be made by mixing NO Insects Maldison with grain (wheat, barley or crushed maize) at the rate of 12.5g to 1kg grain and spread on 500-1000m2 depending on extent of infestation. This should applied around February when the adults appear.

Earthworms

Earthworms are normally regarded as the lawn's friend, aerating and fertilizing the soil. However, bowls clubs often wish to get rid of worms in their highly manicured bowls green. The activity of worms will disrupt the perfect smoothness of the surface and worm casts could drastically influence the trajectory of a bowl. NO Insects Carbaryl 80 can be applied to bowls greens and other grass areas where worms are not wanted.

Lawn Fungal Disease

Lawns are suseptable to fungal diseases such as brown patch, red thread, fairy rings, and others. Fungal disease may a sign that your lawn is under stress from lack of or too much water and/or nutrients. Fungicides in the Kiwicare range such as NO Insect or Disease Spectrum Powder will help control these diseases but also look for a contributing cause and put that right.

NO LAWN WEEDS TURFCLEAN

The perfect solution for the control of all types of annual and perennial broad leaf weeds and clovers in established lawns. NO Lawn weeds Turf clean does not harm grasses*. Optimum time to use is when weed growth is vigorous in spring, summer and autumn.
Available as a concentrate to dilute with water or a ready to use 500ml trigger pack.

*Turfclean should not be used on recently seeded or laid lawn; the grass must be well established before treatment.

NO HYDROCOTYLE

This is a selective herbicide that kills hydrocotyle, creeping oxalis, daisies, clovers and other broad leaf weeds that grow in lawns and turf. Not suitable on Dichondra or cotula lawns or where clover is being encouraged.

No Hydrocotyle painted on the stumps of re-sprouting trees and shrubs such as willow, wattle, barbary, hawthorn, woolly nightshade, gorse, and broom will prevent re-sprouting from the stumps.

NO MOSS AND WEEDS

Controls moss and broad leaf weeds in established lawns. A fertiliser is incorporated in this product which encourages new grass growth after the moss and broad leaf have been treated. NO Moss and Weeds can be sprinkled on as a dry granule or diluted in water and sprayed on.

NO Moss in Lawns controls moss, liverworts and algal slime in lawns, fine turf, amenity turf, cotula bowling greens, paths and other hard surfaces. Application is best made in autumn or early winter before the moss becomes too established or dense.

LAWNGARD PRILLS

This product is specifically formulated for use on ground and soil dwelling insects such as; ants, grass grubs, porina caterpillars, cluster flies, carrot rust fly, wire worms and slaters. Sprinkle granules over the problem areas, then water in well. The insecticide is carried into the soil where the grubs are feeding, or by direct contact of the porina caterpillar in their tunnels.

NO INSECTS CARBARYL 80

This is a general garden insecticide used for the control of insects on ornamentals. It contains 80% carbaryl as opposed the the 5% carbaryl in NO Wasps Dust. Worms are normally beneficial to soil condition, carbaryl is highly toxic to worms and should be used sparingly on soils. However, carbaryl can be used to control worms on bowling greens and where worms are not wanted.
