Every March, our team gets behind Biodiversity Month by heading out into local communities to lend a hand with hands-on conservation and restoration mahi. It’s a chance to step away from the day-to-day, connect with each other and the environment, and do our bit to protect and bring back Aotearoa’s unique native bush — staying true to our purpose of making your place a better place.
This year, we split across two sites close to our hearts — Matukutūruru / Wiri Mountain in Auckland and Mugford Reserve in Christchurch. Both spots are rich in ecological and cultural significance, and at different stages of their restoration journeys, which made it all the more meaningful for our team to get stuck in and lend a hand.
In Tāmaki Makaurau, we had the privilege of lending a hand at Matukutūruru, one of the twin dormant volcanic cones known as Matukurua. While early in its restoration journey, the site holds huge potential. The team helped with weed control, trap setting, and supporting preparations for future planting and pest management work. Plans are in place for a predator-proof fence — an exciting step toward creating a safe and flourishing space for local biodiversity and birdsong.
Over in Ōtautahi, the Christchurch crew were back at Mugford Reserve for the second year running — building on the work they helped kick off last year. This time around, it was all about keeping the momentum going with pest control and continuing to clear invasive weeds so the area can stay a healthy, thriving habitat for native plants and animals.
For us, Biodiversity Month isn’t just an annual calendar event — it’s an opportunity to actively live out our values of making our place a better place and reconnect with the land. Whether it’s laying traps, pulling weeds, or planting native species, the mahi we do reinforces the value of collaboration, community, and continuity in conservation.
These are small but meaningful steps toward a bigger vision — a predator-free New Zealand where our native ecosystems can thrive, and where the birdsong that defines our bush continues to ring strong for future generations.
As plant, pest, and weed experts, our mission is to empower New Zealanders with the tools and solutions they need to feel like heroes in their own backyard — and supporting national biodiversity goals is just one way we stay true to that vision.
We’re proud to continue this mahi each year — and we’re already looking ahead to the next.
