Feeding Your Houseplants

Posted in Houseplant Advice on April 04, 2019

Houseplant Food

All plants need nutrients to grow well. Outdoors, they send out long roots to find nutrients in the soil. Indoors, houseplants may not have that option when their roots are bound within their pot.

Potting Mix

Properly formulated houseplant composts such as Kiwicare Gro-Sure Houseplant Potting Mix contain all the nutrients that the houseplant should need for healthy normal growth. However, with regular watering, there is a danger that nutrients will be washed away over time and these nutrients will need to be replaced.

Feeding

It is not necessary, or advisable, to add fertiliser to every watering, but regular feeding with houseplant fertiliser such as Gro-Sure Houseplant Pump’n’Feed every fortnight will ensure your houseplants have all the nutrients they need without overfeeding them.

Watering

Liquid fertilisers should be added to houseplants when the potting mix is already moist. If the mix is very dry adding fertiliser can harm the roots. So, it is important that the potting mix is already damp when adding fertiliser. Of course, it is also good for the plant not to be under-watered and drought-stressed. Kiwicare Gro-Sure Houseplant Watering Indicator shows you clearly when the plant needs watered.

Slow Release

Kiwicare has made fertilising your houseplants even easier by developing the Gro-Sure Houseplant Droplet Feeder that slowly releases nutrients to the plant pot over time so that you don’t need to remember.

Misting

Houseplants often find themselves in dry internal environments with air-conditioning and heating keeping the humidity below that which the plants need. Many houseplants will thank you for a regular misting of leaves and Kiwicare have developed the Gro-Sure Houseplant Mist’n’Feed to not only keep the humidity up around your plant but to also deliver nutrients directly to the leaves.

Orchids and Succulents

Some specialised houseplants such as orchids and succulents have particular nutrient needs and the Gro-Sure Houseplant Range have products specially formulated to satisfy their needs. There is Gro-Sure Houseplant Orchid Pump'n'Feed, Orchid Mist'n'Feed and Cacti and Succulent Pump'n'Feed.
